Hook and yarn in hand, Nieema cackled at her cousin’s bullshit. With family living so close, it was normal for her house to be packed. Kids, grandchildren, cousins, extended family, and friends were always welcome. It’d be a cold day hell before she closed her doors. They were unlocked for anyone she loved or cherished. Food, a bed, or support. Being there for her people, whether strangers or not, was important. She found room to love everyone who walked into her life. But family? That blood? The familiarity and bond were untouchable. And for vampire kind, community was scarce but sacred. A tight-knit coven was uncommon. Nieema was thankful for her father and his insistence on sticking together. Oftentimes, fledglings were left to fend for themselves or sired far too soon. As a result, they were quick to depart from their sire or family. And some of them got lost along the way. Nieema found the ones she could and offered them a home. Some were excited, others refused, a few poor souls cried in thanks, and a handful wanted nothing to do with covens or her. But it was this need for community that brought them together. Gathering at Nieema’s house for food, dance, and fun had become tradition. Every moon cycle folks’ from both the coven and the town showed up ready to partake. Not every full moon function was met with her hospitality or presence. Blue moons were for celebration and camaraderie. Hunter’s moon was for reconnecting with their vampire roots and spending time with the coven. Pink moons? Well, Nieema used her for love. Twelve hours in the dungeon. No air or sleep, just pure, undiluted magic. True love at its finest. Thinking of her ol’ man, she smiled. “Girl, don’t piss me off!” Loretta shouted. “Nimmy, we out here having a good time. Don’t be doing allat.” “What you mean?” Nieema giggled, playing her hook the mind Loretta wanted. “I’m good. Who winning?” “Me! And you know that already.” Monroe cocked his head and pointed at Loretta. “You can not see me in Spades, heffa. The only way you finna win is if you cheat.” Nieema laughed as them two started bickering. Loretta wasn’t to be played with as a blacksmith. She was built for battle and knew how to wield any blade. At six-two, three-eighty, she had height and weight on deck. Though most let her brown eyes, long lashes, and doll-like features fool them. She was soft but mean as a mama badger. Two sides of a coin. Loretta balanced both effortlessly. She was a lover who also loved to tussle. “If y’all are about to start hollering, take that shit outside!” Mace yelled over the din of old school RnB and cussing. They were a loud and heavy-handed bunch. Out back, on the patio, Nieema lounged, crocheting yet another scarf for Tre. The man wanted a new one every single full moon. It was a task Nieema committed to with gladness. Everybody was happy doing something. They erupted in laughter and heated discussions. A boisterous group mingled around the grill, where Uncle Charlee burned the hot dogs. The kids played tag yards away, and family was talking about throwing hands at the card table. Monroe, Loretta, Auntie Pearline, who smoked like a vexed dragon, and Jo glared at each other. Folks committed to whatever made them happy. Nieema included; she was at peace with her hook and wanted to stay as is, but her soul wouldn’t allow such a thing. “I mean it,” Loretta snapped from the table. “Nimmy, that man is fine wherever he at. Shit!” “You think they was newlyweds,” Uncle Charlee shouted. “Makes me sick.” “I think they’re cute,” Jo said. “Thank you, grandson.” Nieema paused to gulp her liquor. “Mace? Mace, baby, come here.” Mace left Uncle Charlee’s side and was unimpressed. “Can you get grandma some ice?” Mace gave her a side eye before looking at the cooler not ten steps from her chair. Nieema lifted brows and dangled her glass. “I got a pain in my neck. Inna back, I can—“ He snatched it and she gasped. “Boy, you lost your motha fuckin mind. Snatching from me.” “Sorry, Grandma.” “Yeaahh, don’t do that. Don’t wanna get on my bad side. Ya know I kill—“ “A frost ogre!” Every voice near and far hollered in unison. “We know, GG, you not to be messed with. We knoooooww.” She twisted around and grimaced at Jo’s uncalled-for two cents. “Wasn’t nobody talking to you, lil’ Jo.” “Huh.” Mace handed off the ice. “Thank you, baby. Say, you know a lot about technology. I told Jasper about your skills. She needs a website; I told her you can make her one, no problem.” Macion scoffed and giggled. “Grandma, why you tell her that?” “Cause you got a computer business.” “No the hell he don’t!” Tre laughed and pointed at Mace with his loaded hot dog. “GG, he has a free site where he makes business cards and shit. Mace only got like two clients.” “Aye, at least they’re loyal.” Nieema shook her glass, rattling nugget ice. It had a lil’ sugar and blood in it, too. Chunky, easily crunched, with an incredible mouthfeel. She was in love with an ice maker and might catch a body if someone tried to steal it. “Nooo.” She squinted, trying to recall the conversation. That’s not how Nieema remembered it at all. “You said you had a computer business where you make computer software.” “No I did not.” Mace, filled with mirth, and snickered. He scratched his head and said, “Grandma, I helped you with your website one time and showed Papa Buck how to use his social media accounts cause Bernadette, your media manager, was on maternity leave. What I have is digital content business. I make digital fliers, displays, and logos. It’s hardly a business, more like a side hustle.” “Speak it into existence,” Maggie bellowed from inside the house. “Stop doubting yourself, nephew.” Mace rolled his eyes. “Anyway, if Jasper needs help setting up a website, I can do that. But I can’t promise much; I’m still learning my damn self.” “Thank you, baby. I’ll let her know. She needs something. That woman got too much talent. Jasper should be doing it for a living.” Nieema crunched, losing focus quickly. Distracted by the thumping behind her ribs. The telling rhythm and sudden hot flash made her grin. “I know you lying,” Nieema mumbled, setting her glass in its holder. “I’ma be back.” “What I tell yo’ hardheaded ass?!” Loretta snipped. “Etta, ain’t nobody listening to you.” Nieema flapped a hand and set off toward Gallow. “Gimme thirty!” “More like five hours.” “Shut your damn mouth, Jo. And stay outta grown folks’ business.” The sensations popping off within sent Nieema into a flitting cauldron of bats. She took the quickest route to reach her destination. It was urgent, and she was eager to taste the sweet scent which stained the natural forest musk. She landed on the balcony, perched on the slippery ledge like a carnivorous gargoyle. Nieema inhaled greedy gulps of what she knew to be her man’s spent and sweet succubus cream. She licked her lips, eyes pinned to the glistening puddle. If this were the time, she’d slurp it up. Every god damn drop. Nieema salivated, thirst growing wicked. She acted upon instinct and slipped into the tree house as a swirling mist. In this form, she blended well with shadows. Though there weren’t many in Buck’s place. He loved natural lighting, lanterns, and crystal lamps. There weren’t too many nooks and crannies, either, but she found them. Rolling with a subtle breeze, Nieema swirled about upstairs and slipped beneath the door. She spilled into the room like a dense fog and paused. Awestruck and lusty, she listened. They orchestrated a symphony of claps and moans. The music caused her to quiver and rise. The show was obscene, steeped in eroticism. Whatever hesitations Jasper had were good and gone. Buck was a man who fucked as if it was his obligation. It pleased him to rend one orgasm after the other from Nieema. She’d been on the receiving end for more than a century. One, two, three was never enough. And tough Jasper was a hell-bred succubus; she was irrevocably cooked. Nieema’s old man had them legs tied, locked, and in the air. His vicious vines knotted and imprinted upon her skin. The roping dug into her luscious thighs and framed her pussy. It was the perfect view. Hiked up in his very own suspension system, Jasper was wrung loose. Her cries were weak and threaded with pleasure. A mess of curses and pleas. Nieema whipped about and circled the knocking bed. The damn box spring never held for longer than a year with Buck’s relentless beating. He gripped bound thighs and fucked the shit out of Jasper. The woman had covered him in gold and god damn, he was pretty. Strong-willed and sparkling with her surging release. His skin glowed as sweat dripped from stray curls. Nieema ached to yank on his swaying, thick braid and make him bow at her feet. “Gimme one more, you can do it.” “Uggghhhhh—I can—hnng.” She whimpered and panted. “One more! Oh gods, it-just one more! I’m coming agaaain.” Buck, on the edge, talked her through it and Nieema wallowed above them. She ascended, watching like a true, horny, freaked-out voyeur. “Thaaat’s it, darlin’,” Buck said, stroking her slow and easy while he came down off what was probably nut number five. “You make me proud, demon. Lemme look atchu.” Nieema’s form shivered and shuddered at his precious words. Perhaps she was ready for a little collar time. “Bananas,” Jasper roared. “Fucking, bananas. I’m done.” Nieema’s sneaky husband laughed as Jasper growled. She wasn’t having it. “Understood,” Buck nodded and stripped Jasper of every vine. They decorated the bed and floor. The clutter and scraps were about to piss Nieema off a little bit. Somebody had to clean that and them sheets. But as Buck released Jasper, of course his ass just lay there. Head on Jasper’s fabulous tiddie. He was about to fall asleep, and with how Jasper scratched his scalp, he was about to start snoring. Jasper sighed and opened her eyes. She tilted her head and smirked. “You’re a creep.” “You ain’t say that earlier and—“ “Not you,” Jasper said, staring at Nieema’s misting form. “Your wife.” “Nimmy?” Buck sniffed the air, eyes still closed until he lifted them. “Ooooweee. You nosy somthin’. Rude dame.” Jasper giggled and shrugged. “It’s all good. I sensed her a few minutes ago. Didn’t mind the company. Would’ve stopped if I did.” Jasper’s acceptance and the mess they were lying in were enough to get Nieema down. She dropped into her full, corporeal form with hands on her hips. “Buck, get your ass out this bed and wash up! You too, Jasper. Shit. Lying there with nut on your tiddies.” Buck groaned and kicked at crackling vines. “Woman, ain’t nobody tell you to come over bothering me. If I wanna sleep in the wet spot, I will!” “I know you will, filthy motha fucka. Get on somewhere, old oak.” He rolled and shot out of bed, grinning like a damn fool. “I like how you wearing that house dress, beloved.” Nieema gave him a coy shoulder and smiled. “Well, it is your favorite color.” “That it is, baby.” He captured her by the waist and snatched her ass into his solid, damn body. Nieema allowed his wildness to spread like a balm. His kiss never ceased to renew her. It was in his arms where she was born anew every night. Though Buck was greedy and biting, his dick wasn’t up for it. Soft as marshmallows, flaccid, just dangling there. Not even a twitch. Nieema laughed, breaking their kiss. She tugged on his balls and the man hissed. “She sucked you dry, boy.” “I ain’t sucked shit.” “Not with your mouth,” Buck muttered on his way to the bathroom. “C’mon in here and let me wash your feet.” Jasper cackled and sighed, sliding a dulled, tired amber to Nieema. “He’s obsessed with my feet.” “He into toes real bad.” Jasper snickered and sat on the edge of the bed. Nieema glanced at the pillowtop folds of her stomach and heavy breasts. She was a fine piece of woman, and Nieema counted down the hours until they touched again. “It’s funny, cause I’m a foot girl. I make feet content.” “You do what now?!” Buck slid into their conversation, hair free from its tight weave. Nieema grunted as her husband puffed out his chest. “You sell what?” “Feet pics. I make pretty good money. But it’s not enough to pay all my bills. I haven’t posted anything in ages.” “Why not?” Buck asked, staring at her cute, chubby toes. “I wanna see ‘em dressed up. Can I choose the next color for you?” Nieema rolled her eyes. He never picked the right shades. But Jasper was soft on him, so she agreed. She’d come to regret the decision. Nieema only laughed at her naivety as she picked up the small trash bin. “Go on, girl. Get yourself together.” Nieema batted them away and got to cleaning. While they shared water and giggles, Nieema used vampire agility to tidy up. She cleared vines and stripped the bed. After redressing it in fresh linens, she jogged downstairs and prepared the tea. Buck always needed a hefty hot cup after good sex. She flushed at the thought of him and sighed; wistful and enamored. It was a wonder how she still swooned over the old man. Moths and bats fluttered in her belly as she threw a lil’ something together. A midnight snack hit harder after multiple orgasms. A couple slices of homemade lemon pudding cake, strawberries, and sun tea for the lady. It’d tide them over until later. With nothing pertinent to do, Nieema headed back upstairs and headed for the loft. It was her favorite place to relax and read sometimes. Buck’s tree house was essentially his space. His domain. And she didn’t stop by often. Not that she wasn’t welcome, but Nieema wanted her husband to have something of his own as she did. Setting the loaded tray on the coffee table, she eyed the bookshelf stacked with freak nasty offerings. It’d do absolutely nothing for the throbbing ache between her legs, but she’d grab one anyway. “Let’s see,” she skimmed spines and snatched a title she hadn’t read yet, “The Maid Gets Milked. Dear goddess, yes.” Buck stayed on top of his selections and kept it fresh. There was no telling what’d be up in here tomorrow. He was unfussy when it came to his reading material. If the man read anything at all, it was some form of erotica. Taboo, piss, sentient objects, lactation. He didn’t give a damn. Whereas Nieema wasn’t about to read any old thing. Some stuff she never touched. But she wasn’t about to pass up a book with milkmaid in the title. Hell nah. Feet kicked up and crossed on the couch, Nieema waited. She flipped pages and stuffed her face with tiny, marinated cubes of raw beef. As titillating scenes finally grabbed her fixed attention, Jasper appeared. Fresh out of the shower and wearing Buck’s favorite sheer robe, she was a treat. “Hm.” Nieema eyed the demoness. “You didn’t even leave none for me.” The woman blushed and nabbed snacks. She dared not look Nieema in the eye. “He was insufferable, Your Majesty.” Happiness filled her chest and belly. Nieema turned a page and said, “He tore your ass up, chile.” “No crumbs!” Jasper collapsed onto the opposite sofa and groaned. “Your husband is persuasive and charming. Hard to say no when he’s so sweet.” Nieema wagged a finger and nodded in agreement. “He can be generous when throes have him by the antlers.” Jasper chewed and mulled, eyes like a banked fire spoke of her curiosity. “Antlers?” She considered this and went for another slice of cake. “You know, this house is immaculate and built with love. But the furniture is overlarge. Counters are higher than most. Am I correct to assume there’s more to Buck than what I’ve seen?” Nieema smiled behind paperback pages and noted her quiet spouse. He arrived with loose, damp hair and a thin wrap tied at the waist. His slutty ass knew how to tempt a weak-willed woman. It wasn’t often they got to strut around booty butt naked. If not in their room, the dungeon, or his tree house, they had to put some clothes on. Their main house was never empty enough to have tiddies out. “You’d be right, darlin’,” Buck said, smelling like sex and vanilla. “But I ain’t looking to scare you off so soon.” His saccharin scent would drive Nieema to madness. When the moon was high and full, her thirst intensified. Jasper smirked and noshed on her last corner of coke. “If you’re not wearing clown makeup, I’ll be good.” “You’re scared of clowns?” Nieema asked, finding this confession adorable as hell. The demon dusted off her hands and nodded. “Full face makeup in general creeps me out. Not like foundation and shit. But like, costumes and face paint. It terrifies me. Though, the latter is ceremonial in Undervell. It’s always scared me. Since an underling.” Buck nabbed his tea, added a piece of cake to his saucer, and dropped into his recliner. With her book and beef, Nieema wanted to be content, but she was starving for his honeyed blood. She wasn’t sure if Buck was even up for it after his marathon with Jasper. “Imma eat this, then feed you,” Buck said, grinning. Nieema winked and let him eat in peace. “You scared of clowns, that’s fair. I’m scared of snakes.” Jasper laughed at this and beamed. “You, scared of snakes?” “Yup. Iown want to see one, hear it, feel it. Hell no! Keep them far away from me.” “Even garden snakes,” Nieema muttered. “I love them, though. Cute little dirt noodles.” “Nope. They be in attack mode.” “They keep bugs from tearing up your plants.” “Do I care?!” Buck shouted with a mouthful. “Every time he sees one in the field, he comes running to me.” “That’s right! You love ‘em so damn much. Shit.” Jasper giggled but deadpanned. “You are in the forest now, Buck. I’m sure there are snakes aplenty here.” “As long as I don’t see them, I’m straight. Mm. This tea is good, my love. You can make a nice cup when you want to.” “What you saying?” “Huh?” Buck shook his head and tried not to laugh. “Nothin’. Just you know, sometimes your tea is kinda bitter.” “Bitter?!” Nieema sat bolt upright and grimaced. “Hol’ on, cause whose tea you calling bitter? I was putting the kettle on before you was even born, my guy.” “Wait, you’re older than him?” Jasper asked, grabbing her glass. “By a hundred years or so.” “Daaaammmmnnn,” Jasper snickered. “You like them seasoned, Buckley.” “You right.” “Seasoned?! Why I never…” Nieema gasped and threw her book. Laughter threatened her stern delivery. Feigning vexation, she snarled. “You know what? Both of y’all finna get put on my list.” Their trio laughed as Nieema rose and sashayed on over to her man. She retrieved his empty dishes and set them on the tray. “Woman, I wann’t done with that yet.” “You ate every last bite; hush your mouth.” Buck pulled her close and into his lap. No matter the years or countless memories they shared, Nieema was giddy when up in his space. She looped an arm around his neck and laid two pecks upon his cheek. “You need to shave,” Nieema mumbled as the man rested his head on her breast. “And with a straight razor, too.” “Stop bothering me.” “It’s scratchy, and them electric ones don’t work as well.” “I don’t get cut with them, either.” He kissed her neck, and she tittered. “Teasing me. Mmmhm, my big baby.” Nieema held him close and squeezed, loving their silent connection. It thrummed within her veins and danced on the heart strings which tether their souls. She kissed the top of his head and inhaled her sleep aid. While Nieema lavished her king with affection, she noted Jasper’s quiet joy. “What’s got you smiling like that, dear?” “Your love.” Nieema blushed as Buck patted her hip and nuzzled her jawline. Heat might have grazed her cheeks. “It’s carried us through much.” “We’re not perfect, Jasper. We worked hard for this here.” Buck nibbled on Nieema’s cleavage, and she popped him in the head. His dark laughter delighted an old vampire. Though, it wasn’t something he could promise tonight. He bumped her chin and called for her attention. The world lay in his eyes. They gleamed with life and vitality. Nieema had come to adore his uniqueness. Dignified scars on his brow, upper lip, and temple made him handsome. He was no blemish-free vampir,e and Nieema loved that most. “It ain’t always tea and roses,” Buck grunted and locked into their eye contact. He pressed upon her soul and heart. “Every marriage has its trials and droughts. We aren’t the exception. But I am still here because Nieema is worth more to me than being right. Her love inspires hope and brings me peace. She is my better half. My queen of all. And the reason I choose to be the best version of myself. I wake every night praying I make her proud.” Nieema bared her fangs and hissed in his face. “You know good, and damn well I’m proud of you! Every single—ooo, you gon’ make me cry in front of company?! Buckley, look here—boy, I oughta…whew.” Nieema blinked as tears pricked. Her throat clenche,d and her tongue refused to work. She averted her gaze, turned away from Jasper, and placed her head on his broad shoulder. “Girl, he’s too much.” Nieema swallowed a lump of hot coals and said, “I swear to the gods. Makes me sick. Can’t stand his ass.” “You’re a terrible liar.” Buck rubbed her back and patted. His gentle reassurance was more than enough to calm the pyre in her gut. He soothed the emotional influx and tapped her thigh. “G’head, baby doll, I know you need it.” “I do,” she pouted. “You smell too damn good. Like vanilla bean ice cream and Jasper’s pussy.” The succubus coughed and hacked. She dribbled with purpling cheeks. “Shit, Nieema. You’re far too bold.” “Well,” she popped her shoulder and angled her old man’s head just so. “You got something I can’t resist, dear. And just so you know, we vampires aren’t known for tact or propriety.” Nieema grabbed a fistful of Buck’s hair, unhinged her jaw, and sank fangs an inch deep into his throat.
Britney was a sexy female vampire who knew what she had, as did most, if not all persons she encountered. Low flirted, charming her in minutes. He watched that perky ass without being shy about it. And ooooff course, she gave her number with ease. What world was he living in? AB competing with his own secretary, hm. Well Miss Universe had better get in line or he’d fire her pretty ass. She wasn’t about to take lead in this here movie, hell no. Jaxon Aubrey was the starring bitch up in here. Young tramp. “—if that’s it.” “Oh shit, my bad, Tracy. What did you say?” “I said, if we’re wrapped up here then…” “Uh, yeah, sure.” As AB stood, his ten O’Clock followed suit. “You wanna take a look at the office?” “Why not? Is it as nice as yours?” “Hell yeah, but there’s nothing in it aside from boxes.” Their party made an exit with Low tailing. The whore uttered something to Britney in passing. She ought to revise her resume. “As you can see,” AB said, loud enough to get everyone’s attention. “The lobby, so to speak, is expansive.” Stopping at Tracy’s future office, he pointed to the right. “Around the corner, is the break room and bathrooms. We have guest and private. There is a quiet nook as well, for a minute of peace or reading. “And to the left, is our conference room, but it’s completely useless. This isn’t a fortune five hundred company. Uhhm, oh, there’s also a file room and storage for cleaning supplies.” AB pushed the frosted, sliding door aside and sauntered into the barren space. “This, Tracy, will be where you do whatever it is you do. You have a corner suite, panoramic views, high- shine pine floors throughout, and thirty-foot ceilings. No offense, but you will pay for your own wifi and internet access. It’s safer that way.” Staring at the hustling life below, AB shoved hands into his slacks. He lacked patience at the moment. Low’s scent traveled and rolled like an angry storm cloud. Bergamot, Old Spice and Shea Butter. He knew what to wear because nothing clashed on his skin. Each heady note caressed the other, and had AB on the brink of madness for hours. He wanted another piece. Had assumed he didn’t. Walked away without a care in the world, until those lonely daylight hours set in and he couldn’t think of anything, or anyone else. Max and Low were indeed a package deal. “What do you think?” AB asked, on the turn about. “There’s more than enough room.” “Oh, I’m all in. No complaints.” Tracy smiled, or grinned, maybe. It was lopsided and painful. Dear god, did the man ever stop frowning? “Perfect.” AB made way towards his new buddy and clapped him on the shoulder. “Just hit me when you’re set to move in.” “Will do, I’ll get started on furnishings promptly. I may bring Jaya, she has a marvelous eye for interior design.” “Swell. Now, I don’t wanna rush you out. But I have a lunch date.” Tracy nodded and marched onward. “No no, I don’t want to hold you. We’ll talk in a few days.” AB loomed near Britney’s desk to keep the flirting duo at a professional distance. He waved and watched as Low stalked behind Tracy. When the pair vanished, he ripped his phone from a pocket. “Britney, I’m going out. Let me know if anyone comes in. If not, I’ll be here in time for my one-thirity.” “Yes, sir.” She grinned like a back stabber. He returned the expression but headed for the door with eyes and thumbs on his phone. Sending a text, AB didn’t expect a reply, but received one anyway. Low: What is this? Jaxon wrote back as he stabbed the call button. AB: It’s my address. Do what you want with it. He smirked, staring at the other small silver circle. AB grunted and punched it. Back to their convo, he snickered as a text came through. “What?” Stepping in the elevator, he frowned at the straight face emoji Low sent. “What does that mean?” AB poked the letter B and groaned jabbing a finger into the five, six, seven, eight— “Stop it Mr Aubrey.” An ominous, disembodied tinny voice blared overhead. “Please stop…stop, do—” He stabbed nine. “I can’t stop, it’s like I—” “Mr Aubrey you will be fined fifty do—” He squealed, stashed his phone and swiped over every button until the panel glowed like a bright Christmas tree. With a ding, AB tore ass out of the cube. “I’m sooorrry, Jerrrry!” he yelled, gunning for his car. Jerry was only human but he was a mean old man who liked to poison people. There’d been some disappearances and AB was sure Jerry did it. The security guard hated this one guy who came in loud and threw cigarette butts on the lobby floor. Mother fucker vanished. The lady with the dog that pooped all over the place? She never cleaned it up. One night, she stopped showing up. Her and the dog. Coincidence? Hell nah. AB was a vampire who’d break every bone in Jerry’s body, but he was a terrifying geezer with a gun. And, and! He’d shoot AB dead in the street if given the chance. In the whip and in a hurry he made tires scream through the garage. Ab didn’t have time like that, he needed to make a stop. Not for no lunch date either, well that depended on what he ate. Laughing like a mad man, he smashed uptown to Miami Beach. In a matter of minutes, he parked in front of Chase, hopped out, and stomped straight for Ink in Hell. There was a group of teenagers and a middle-aged dame waiting to get marked up. He had an appointment so they’d wait a little longer. “You’re back again, I see.” The dark haired goth girl smirked. Leaning on the counter AB grinned. “I am.” “Well, Jaxon, we are kinda busy here, and unless you have—” “I do have an appointment. With Max.” The female shook her head. “You do not. I have a book here that says,” she flipped open the thing and tapped on a page, “Tucker. You, are not Tucker. I can’t fit you in with Max, but nice try.” Diving into a deep pocket, AB smiled. He retrieved his wallet and searched for the right slip of plastic. “Here we go.” After snapping the ID free, he showcased it for her thorough examination. “Wowww, yeah. That’s slick. She wouldn’t have agreed otherwise. You’re a sneaky one. My name is Ndari, by the way. And Max is my best friend of thirty-five years, so take it easy. Have a seat, she’s almost done.” AB stashed the card and found himself waiting with everyone else. He peered at works of art and thought how perfect each piece was. Art, of highest order. People entered and observed. They left, only to return minutes later. He noted Jordan, a burly male who wasn’t shy. And a blonde named Chrissy, who put Barbie to shame. They were a loud lively crew, who kept him entertained. At least eight songs played before Max appeared. “Get out.” She flapped a hand then pointed at the door. “That’s some rude shit, I’m a paying customer. Yours, actually.” “You ain’t no paying nothing,” Max hissed. “You really stalking me now. I’m busy, I have an appointment.” Ndari grimaced and said, “He is your appointment.” “What?” “Yeah, he showed his ID.” “Let me see it.” Max scoffed, pointed at AB and crooked a finger. “Come here, show it to me. Lying ass.” “Yup.” Victory put some sauce in his stride, as if wanting to fuck her senseless didn’t move him. AB committed to the same routine and supplied his identification. Max snatched it. “You sneaky son of a bitch. Huh.” Throwing it at him, she sighed. “What are you getting?” “I want, ‘aspire and inspire’ right here.” He smacked a tiny, pale blotch just above his clavicle and Max snarled. “Are you serious? That’s corny, bruh.” “I’ll get what I want,” he snapped, leveraging weight on the counter. AB stared at his own reflection. Despite the dark glasses, her glare burned his face. “The customer is always right. Don’t argue with me.” “Pfft, I don’t follow such guidelines up in here. Give me a second to write it out.” He grinned. “Of course.” AB stayed put as she gathered a few things. Some type of illuminated glass plate and paper. Max worked quickly, vampire efficiency came in clutch. She used a calligraphy pen like a master. The way her lips moved while smacking on that gum got him tight. “How’s this?” She spun the drawing and AB whistled. “I have no words. It’s elegant, yet, masculine. Sharp and soft. It’s perfect. I want it.” “Come on.” “Don’t you need to trace it s?” “I don’t do that. I draw right on transfer paper.” “Oh.” The trip was short as they stopped in a small room. It was much like many other tattoo parlors he’d seen. “Take your shirt off.” “I thought you’d never ask.” He handled cuffs, shirt tails, and buttons in seconds. After which, Ab sat in the chair, anticipating her touch. Max dropped onto a rolling stool and drew near. She wagged a finger and said, “You think you cute, and slick, but you aren’t. Low just texted me, and you, wow…chiiile.” She tilted his chair back with the push of a button and snapped on gloves. “I could have sworn you were A-okay, Jaxon.” The woman used her speed again, shaving the area and cleaning it. “Can’t I have a change of heart?” AB asked. “I suppose, what’s your color?” “I don’t know, I don’t care. Surprise me.” “Next to extra cheese please,” Max grinned, applied the ink ointment shit and pressed the paper to his skin, “those are my favorite words to hear.” “I thought they were ‘turn over’.” AB chuckled while she smoothed wrinkles out of the parchment. “You want me to punch you in the face?” “If that’s what you gotta do.” She groaned, peeled the thin sheet from his flesh and smirked. “A clean transfer.” This female was mean and snappy, but she had a lovely voice and dewy painted skin. A glowing deep amber he wanted to kiss and admire. Truth be told, she had AB fucked up. Where did she get the gall? Clouding his judgment and ruining his focus. AB didn’t fuck with flighty, forgetful, and poor. “You ready?” “Whenever you are,” he whispered. Max swiveled, dipped the needle in whatever color and returned. “Don’t move.” “Yes, ma’am.” “Gross. Don’t ma’am me.” As the tattoo machine buzzed, she leaned forward and made contact. The subtle pinch felt good. AB had something like forty-eight tats. The sensation was the norm and he enjoyed the atmosphere. A humming motor of moving parts, hushed chatter, and music were common. He’d had a hundred sessions, but this one was different. AB sifted through various notes, and sounds, searching for Max’s thrumming heartstrings. “Why are you nervous?” “Shut up,” Max demanded. He smiled and cut from the ceiling to her hovering head. Decadent aromas swirled, he inhaled in greedy gulps. Gardenia, Dove, and Shalamar. Old school and alluring. Max shot upward to wipe and swap needles. “I like your hair like this,” AB said. “Boy, I don’t care what you like.” “Who asked? I’m gonna tell you anyway. I like your hair curly. It looks good with the two-tone thing you got going.” She dipped again and returned, the added pressure satisfied him immensely. “It takes some work to get it like this, though,” Max muttered into his shoulder. A rush of warm air against his flesh was too much and not nearly enough. AB bit his bottom lip and buckled down on a vicious purr. “What is it? Flexirods? Curl wand?” “What—” Lifting her head, Max paused. “What you know about that shit?” “’Cause I fuck with it too,” AB snapped. “I like curls sometimes. You apply Pump It Up, or mousse, and heat. Fluff that shit and you got curls for days. But, a curling iron is still my staple.” Max giggled. The sexy melody reverberated through him. Leaning again, she blew a fat bubble smelling of sweet watermelon ‘til it popped. “You know what?” Max mused. “I don’t think you need allat. You have a ridiculous amount of volume already.” “I do, but sometimes I want ringlets, you know. I think I’m gonna straighten my hair next week. I want a glossy flat panel look.” She grunted. “Laying in on thick, are we?” “I wasn’t trying to, but if it works…” Max didn’t say anything for some time. She switched needles and wiped in silence. “You really tryin’ to mess with this, Red?” “I’m here.” “That’s not what I asked. You are spreading yourself pretty thin. And we don’t, I don’t, got time for no bull shit.” She sat up, meeting his eyes with her shades. “I don’t care about who, or what you do when you’re not with me, and I expect the same courtesy. We are wayyyy too grown, especially you. Let’s keep it simple, honey, okay?” Max turned, grabbed the balm and spread it over his ink. “I have too much going on,” she continued. “And from what I hear, you have black bags and cargo ships. I don’t got no business fucking with somebody like you. But, I can’t help myself. Being with the shit is in my nature.” As his chair ascended slowly, in automated fashion, Max removed her gloves. “We’re done here. That’ll be two-fifty, and twenty percent gratuity. Three hundred out the door, Big Red. Go on, take a look.” AB sighed on his rise, faced the mirror, and gawked. “You little shit.” “What? You said—” “Fuck off,” he yelled, while she snickered. The words were beautiful. The colors, however, ruined his aesthetic. She blended with precision. From a dark, royal purple to a blush pink that ended in a bright turquoise. “I’m gonna kill you,” AB intoned. “Are any of my tattoos purple or pink?” “What the hell? Boy you said ‘surprise me’, I did.” “You crackin’ wise?” “No, grandpa.” She snorted again. He sat in the chair, pulling her and the stool over. “Excuse me?” With hands in her hair and lips pressed, AB explored. She tasted like honeysuckle. Shutting Max up was of the utmost importance, but more so, he wanted her. Wide open. Legs and arms latched onto him through long, blazing summer days indoors. His heart kicked and lungs stalled but he made a mess of their connection. Savage and sweet, she simpered, slouching into him. When AB had Max right where he wanted her, he snipped their tether. Struggling for oxygen and unable to think clearly, he listened to her hard, punching breaths. “Are you gonna come over?” AB asked. “I do—what? I don’t have—” “Ask Low,” he commanded, freeing her from his grasp. “He has my address.” AB stood, gathered his shirt and slipped it on. Max sat there, on the stool, staring;dazed. Her fang tips were far too visible. “You wanna put those away? Might scare your customers.” “They think it’s cosmetic.” She shrugged. “They’re an upsell, along with my tiddies.” Her breathy reply was pleasant to the ears. She’d be putty in his hands like the rest. “Smart, I’ll let you get to it.” Tucking his shirt, AB left Max with her stuttering thoughts. What fun, the art of seduction. And now, he had two on the line to cast a spell on. Damn, AB was an old bitch, but he still knew how to reel ‘em in..
Max stabbed off twice and nothing happened. “What the f—Oh.” After putting the Jeep in park, she smashed the damned button, snatched her bag and jumped out. She hustled quick as possible, running into the house. She hustled into her room, kicking clothes and shucking Crocs. In a blur of movements, she lost bottom and top layers on her way to the bathroom. Soap, scrub, and face to kill two birds. Shaving required time she didn’t have, but committed nonetheless. Her coochie was looking rough around the edges. Damn it all. Their rule or whatever the hell it was. She was ’bouta get double stuffed and busted open. When Red entered her shop, Max wanted to take him down where he stood. Big sexy self, barging in like he owned the god damn world. She put on for the team, and played a gooooooood game. Nope, no dice. Max cleared the stall, snagged a towel and swept it over her steaming skin. Body butter followed. It was a whip she made from scratch. African Shea, coco butter, and rose water. Glistening and soft, she scurried for the closet. Thin lace was the plan Black and bold, see through and scantily. Next was a summer dress with sandals. Come on now, she wasn’t playing. Max moisturized her face, brushed teeth, and added lashes within seven minutes. A matte plum lip made her pop off. On the run, she stabbed bamboos into her ears and filled a spennanight bag. Sketch book, purse, charger annnnnd… “Rose quartz.” For romantic energies. Zooming on her way out, she turned everything off and ran into Jaya. “Where is the fire, girl?” “Sorrrry,” Max chimed in passing. “I gotta go.” “It’s four-fifteen, Maxine!” Looking back, she smiled and said, “I know, I’ll be indoors soon. I swear. I love you.” “I love you too, but please text me when you get in.” “I will.” She opened the door just in time. The Monte Carlo pulled up loud, slapping Steelo. Max slid into the passenger seat with a fiendish giggle. “Go go go.” Busting a u-turn, Low knew what time it was. They had roughly forty-minutes to get inside. Throwing her bags in the back, she saw his duffel on the seat and snickered. “Oh my god, I almost slipped in the shower.” “You and me boff.” He smiled around the blunt and said, “This isn’t smart, Maxi.” “Then it’s a good thing we a couple of dumb asses, huh?” Low choked on smoke and jumped on 836 East. He was right, though, this wasn’t an intelligent decision. Agreeing to another tryst in the wee hours of the morning was what demon dick did to you. It had yo’ ass rushing to beat the crack of dawn for it. Risking your life for a bite. The word DRAMA flashed like a blazing neon billboard in her mind. “Do you think he was being honest about the drug dealer thing?” Max asked. “Why is he an accountant if he’s moving weight?” Low kept eyes on the road and changed songs ‘til landing on Ball Greezy. Song Cry resonated with them, and how sad was that. She thought of it as their ghetto ‘love song’. “I know the look,” Low muttered. “Most D-boys don’t lie about shit like that. Claiming to be a don is a waste of time. Don’t nobody really want the responsibility. Folks who been in the game like me? Nah.” Low shook his head and changed lanes without a blinker, ‘cause four-fifteen reared its head. Sunrise was at five-oh-five. “It’s a hard life,” Low added. “Watching your back with money on the line. He gotta answer to somebody who answer to somebody. I wouldn’t wanna do the shit. It is not, for the average, baby. And I’m all about my money, but not desperate enough to where I’d deal with that shit again. No thank you.” She admired his profile, loving how far Low had come and how he turned his whole life around. She loved his rough edges, but looked at his progress as an inspiration. He had a dark past, yeah. But who didn’t? Low was a good man, to her, to his brothers, and he protected her father. For a paycheck, albeit, but being a bodyguard was honorable. The job required a special kind of person. Someone courageous and compassionate enough to put their life on the line for another. She smiled something tough. “What?” “You’re resilient is all,” Max proclaimed, meaning every word. Low beamed, grabbed her hand and kissed her knuckles. “I’m serious. You beat the odds, and made it out alive with the world against you. And you did it by yourself, without an ounce of support. But I swear to god, Elliot, as long as I live, you’ll never be alone again.” Low didn’t care to breach certain discussions. Not that he was callous or aloof. The problem here, was his heart. It was exhausted and overworked. Battered, in pieces, and encased in steel. Low didn’t respond thanks to his aching heart. He couldn’t. The hurt was too deep. Past indiscretions she had nothing to do with told Low, she was bullshitting. Memories and trauma whispered in his ear, telling him Max was a liar. She wished he believed her, but words were cheap. They meant nothing, so she’d show him. Come hell or high water, Low would see her fealty. Ten years for an aged vampire didn’t amount to shit but a drop in the bucket, as they say. Their road would never be easy. Max was beyond fucked up. And what were they doing right now? Adding another level of complexity to a situationship rife with adversity. “Where does he live?” Max asked. Low pulled the blunt from his lips and said, “Collins.” “Seriously?” she grimaced. “That’s what he said.” “Damn, I never been inside a place on Collins.” “Our kind ride through, we don’t stop.” Max scoffed. Maybe he was a drug dealer. Any and everything on Collins was in the multi-million territory. Not just one M nope, definitely plural. Her dad was well off, always had been. Comfortable, but not piss hundreds stable. More like college tuition paid, and a pair of Gucci loafers twice a year. set. “His attire makes sense now,” Max grumbled. “I’m tellin’ you, that man sported Patek. But I was like, it’s prolly leased or old, fake or stolen. Nahhhhh, it’s real.” As butterflies invaded and exploded in her belly they made an exit on Alton. According to the hoe on Google their destination was on the left. “This might be a set up for shooting him.” Max gulped, she was dead ass. Low giggled and snuffed his blunt. “Baby, if anything, he finna beat my ass for calling his last batch of weed doodoo.” “Why whou—” She smacked his arm. “Why would you tell him that?!” “’Cause he getting away with murder! The Zeus Blue strain is terrible. Shit gotta stop. I paid too much for it last time, and for whaaaat? A whack ass high. Stick and stems baby…sticks and stems.” She heard what he was saying but had eyes out the window when he made a louie into L’Atelier. She smashed on by the building a hundred times since its erection in 2017. Max knew of its predecessor, though. Golden Sands Hotel. Originally named Bombay. Everybody who was somebody jigged up in there. Rat Pack days were ones to see in Miami. Ella, Frank, Sammy, and Dean had Sands on lock. She missed the era, strictly for its entrainment. Nothing more. The moment they stopped in front, a lady ran around to the driver side. Max tapped switches and dropped it. Any ol’ body wasn’t about to touch her shit. The valet’s amazement came to a head when she asked for a picture of his car. Low allowed it, grabbed the ticket and his bag while Max got hers. “Valet,” Low uttered as he slung the the duffel across his body. “Fancy.” “Where does he stay?” Max asked. He emerged, hurried to her side and took hold of her palm. “He said the top.” “As in penthouse?” “Yeah.” Max entered the fine establishment with a lax jaw. She’d never been in a penthouse, but knew they were opulent. The lobby was quiet. No music and no talking. Just the sound of their squeaky soles echoing in the large lavish cave. Damn near five am meant no foot traffic, aside from their late night creeping. Max nodded at the security guard. He waved from behind his big desk as they hit a quick left. She poked the elevator call button and sighed. “You think he has food?” Max whimpered, rubbing her tummy. “I’m hungry.” “Me too, we shoulda ate. This ain’t no dinner date. It’s a slide, baby, he not finna offer us caviar.” She frowned and hopped in the waiting lift. “Penthouse it is.” Pressing the PH, doors closed and off they went. Upwards, into the sky, and above the horizon growing lighter by the second. “Whew, sixteen floors,” Max said, oddly impressed. “I stayed at the Ritz Carlton. Up on Bal Harbor. That was nice.” Low grimaced. “When the hell you stay at the Ritz?” “You remember the wedding? For one of my dads employees about two years ago?” “Oh right, right. I ain’t know you stayed at the Ritz, though.” “Yeah, talk about classy. Sworvorski and platinum. It was a time, honey. I had fun.”
Low bobbed his head but wasn’t engaged in their conversation, on account of the butterflies. He needed the whole blunt, not half. Needed a whole zip, not an eighth to calm this bout of bad nerves. Low stood in the elevator watching numbers ascend. The closer they got, the more he had to piss. Low grew anxious for many reasons. One of them being, laying eyes on Red in general. It wasn’t getting easier. And two, this was their third encounter after, the sex. This never happened. Max was the only person he saw concurrently. Low filled their separations with one-night stands. He had reasons for that as well, and didn’t want to scrutinize the decision. Doing so might tell him something he already knew, but was unprepared and unwilling to accept. A pleasant ding said they arrived, and the moment them doors parted his jaw dropped. “Damn.” He’d never seen a view like the one before him. Cautiously, Low and Max shuffled out of the elevator and crossed a sweeping threshold. With front doors ajar, he assumed they were welcome. “Oh my god,” Max said, amazed. The balcony shutters were open, giving them a magnificent view of the ocean. Velvety black but lightening by the second. His eyes blurred and skin tingled with a rapidly approaching sunrise. “We on top of the world, Maxi.” “Unhuh.” She nodded as everything got swallowed up. The tall and wide terrace disappeared behind tinted panels. “Awwww come onnnn,” Max whined. It was good, though, ‘cause Low rather not be burned alive. Places like these had too many god damn windows, and he wondered if the tint was enough. A resounding whir and clanking of metal soothed his worries. “Ohhhh. Steel blinds. Smart.” “Hell yeah.” He agreed and released her hand. Spinning around, Low’s eyes lifted to high ceiling and light fixtures casting a warm, caramel glow. Clean cut and modern. Sexy and chic. Much like Red’s office, muted tones were propped up against off-white backdrops. The staircase, a splash of black in an otherwise serene space, wrapped around yet another lift. “Imma use the elevator,” Low muttered. “He got too many damn stairs.” “Same.” There was rich, then there was whatever Red’s pocket were lined with. And if Low judged by the foyer alone, he’d say Red was loaded. Muhfucka made bank. Quite possibly owned one. It smelled of expensive decor, sea salt, mens cologne, and dogs. “Dogs?” “Dogs?” Max asked, as she veered left, heading for the bar. “Yeah, dogs.” A big bear horse looking beast came barking and growling. It barreled straight for them and Max yelped. She took off, darting for the stairs. As the big one galloped a tinier, angrier, fat one trailed and barked. Low held out his hands and screamed. “Hay! Heel! Heel! Sit! Get your dogs, bruh!” He joined Max in climbing the stairs ‘cause he heard their clawed fucking paws. She almost slipped on the first landing, but Low had her back. After picking up shortie, they reached the mezzanine and made a quick right. Low hustled down the hall and pushed through the first door he saw. Slamming it with a foot, he cackled and set Maxi down. “Oh my god.” She giggled and snorted. “I don’t wanna kill his dog.” “Me either, I love dogs. Just not ones that wanna eat me. You seen the big one? He could fuck up a whole German Shepherd.” “Why didn’t he hear you?” “I don’t know, baby. Shit, hol’ up. Lemme call him right quick.” Low dove into a denim pocket, snagged the IOS and tapped. Waiting for an answer, he sauntered around the washroom fit with a Whirlpool. He scoffed and touched a thick, luxurious towel. Red answered with exasperation. “Let me guess, something came up?” “What? Nah. Man, get your fucking guards. We stuck in the bathroom.” There was something like laughter on the other end. “Oooh, yeah. Uhm, okay. My fault.” Red killed the call and Low grunted. “I like how he sound on the phone.” Max hopped up on the counter and smiled. “You can go first this time.” “I mean, if you want me to.” As her legs kicked, Low slipped between them and kissed her plump lips. “You just wanna watch.” “True.” “Freak nasty hoe.” “I ain’t never denied it.” Low kissed her nose and wanted to bottle the scent unique to Max. She fashioned her own creams and butters for years. Long before it was on trend. The high floral scent she naturally had tag teamed other shit. It never failed to make him hard. As if her soft body, sultry lilt, and lovely smile wasn’t enough. “Is that Victoria Monet?” he asked, as music spilled into the bathroom from outta nowhere. “Oh hell nah, he really finna put you in coma, Max.” She started singing along to F.U.C.K and Low snickered when they heard Red’s deep, silken timbre. Somebody was ’bouta get fucked ‘ight, ‘cause Low was stiff, all up in the dick area. He picked Max up again, only to help her down. “Y’all can come out,” Red said, chuckling. What was funny? Shortie opened the door and Low swayed on his feet while she leaned against him. A vision to be had. Damp, burly, and bare. Red was busy. That’s why he didn’t hear anything. He was getting wet. Fresh out the shower, with dripping hair and a low hanging towel. What Low wanted to do to this man was obscene and depraved. Low purred a little, it was uh assident. He pushed Maxi out first. “Don’t be shoving me, them dogs are right there.” Red smiled and said, “They’re not gonna bite you.” “They is!” Low declared with the big black horse giving him an evil eye. “Look at him, he wanna bite my fat ass, I see it.” Max laughed while Low tried not to. “Don’t lau…it ain’t funny, baby.” “I swear,” Red stressed. “They don’t bite. I don’t raise guard dogs. They’re babies.” “Like hell,” Low refuted. Red gestured to Maxi. “Come here, I’m telling you the truth.” She groaned, scooting forward. Jaxon grabbed her hand and placed it on the grizzly bear. Low flinched but the dog was calm. In fact, that thing lifted its giant, fluffy head and licked her. “Awwwww, hiiiii.” Now she was happy, accepting the dogs affection. Low rolled his eyes and joined her. He patted their head and got licked. The small one barked and jumped on his leg. “Okay, okay.Squatting, Low gave the small one some attention. “Seeeee, don’t make my kids out to be monsters. That’s rude.” Red started down the mezzanine and his fur balls followed. As did everyone. They marched downstairs while Low stared without shame. All the hair distorted his view of a red and black Celtic mural. Low remembered it from serving phenomenal back shots. On the main level, they passed the bar, foyer, another hall and dining. “I like the flow of your place,” Low said. “Open floor plans are nice. Airy.” “You like intimate spaces, stop kissing ass.” Max rolled her neck and eyes. “I do like other stuff, Maxine.” Their group halted in the kitchen, where more modern fixtures awaited. Dark wood and marble. Ample counter space and an eight burner stove. Ohhhhh how he’d love one of those. “I didn’t hear you ‘cause I had on my earbuds.” Red dug in the fridge and pulled various aluminum containers. “The noise cancellation is god tier.” “They’re waterproof?” Max asked. “Most are.” On the turn around, Red showcased like Vana White. “I ordered this earlier. Thought you weren’t coming, so I put it away.” Plates and glasses were added to Low’s surprise. He had been mistaken. There was food involved. So then like, they’d talk…before fucking. Like a date? “I ain’t a cook,” Red said mid chuckle. “I burn water. So feel free to make yourself a plate and reheat it. I’m gonna put some clothes on. It’s Italian, by the way.” “Oh myyyy god,” Max moaned. She and Italian had a close relationship. With dogs on his heels, Jaxon sprinted upstairs. Low flung a wide gaze to Max who popped a shoulder and said, “What were you saying?” “I stand corrected.” Low dropped his bag on a stool and examined the fixings. “Okay, what you want, baby? We got six pans, let’s see…” Low popped a top and she gasped. “Lasagna, I want that.” “I know, what else… uh ooo, fried calamari.” Her scowl was adorable, but Low loved squid. “Salad, shrimp fetachini, Melazane, I know you want that.” “Yessss, fried eggplant is bomb with hot sauce.” After grabbing a plate, Low topped it with what he knew Maxi wanted. She didn’t need to tell him, ‘cause a brotha memorized every detail about her. Likes, loves, and dislikes stained his frontal lobe. Never to be erased.
Chauncey, look at you, being a bully.” Red pointed at his son and wagged a finger. “You scared them half to death. And you, Bort.” His fat Corgi barked and returned to the bone she enjoyed. “Aw see, you like the Joe brand, huh sweetie? Chauncey, that was some rude shit.” The big guy whimpered as Red threw his towel into a hamper. His closet was a maze. Long shelves stacked with loafers, boots, and sneakers flanked the cavernous space. Others held hats and bags. Everything had its place. Even ties, watches, pockets squares, and cuffs sat in their own drawer. Coming in at around three hundred square-feet, the walk-in had racks on racks. Silks, wools, and cashmeres hung like royal finery. But he wasn’t wearing that right now, nah. In a drawer, designed for boxers and pajamas, he plucked a pair of silk bottoms and a tank. Simple and easy to remove. “Besides, we aren’t leaving with the sun high.” He smirked. “Even if it wasn’t, we ain’t leaving. I’m just happy they came, Chauncey. I was worried.” He barked and AB nodded. “I know, I shouldn’t care this much.” On the way out, he checked his reflection. Their reaction was priceless. AB had been in bed, fully dressed in Versace, listening to Whitney when Low called moments ago. He’d already showered, which lasted for an hour. Prep sucked, he hated it. “What?” Peering down at Chauncey, he scoffed. “I put on a show, seduction requires finesse.” When his kid barked in agreement AB hit the door and sprinted downstairs. He made sure music fit the mood. Mellow, sexy and slow. Tannerelle was in rotation at the moment. Some time ago, AB jumped in her DM. All he wanted was a digital autograph. He’d even bought her last album on vinyl and he didn’t even have a record player anymore. But, he bought all Whitney’s Vinyls as well. Queen and Stevie Wonder as well, ‘cause hello…fucking legends. Overhearing their hushed chatter, he grinned. Yes, they were having a meal together and yeah, AB didn’t know what it was about either. Fuck and sleep was the plan. Halfway home, he axed the idea. “Do you like it?” AB asked, beelining for the food. “I ordered from Prima.” “Mhm.” Max nodded and Low lifted a glass of Blanc. “Good, I had no idea what you wanted, so I got a bit of everything.” AB grabbed a plate of his own and piled on pasta stuffed with lump crab. The lobster sauce was fire. “That shit with the pink sauce is phenomenal,” Low proclaimed. “What is that?” “I don’t know, it said pink sauce. I ain’t eaten it.” “Why not?” Max grimaced while he threw four slices of garlic bread on another slab of porcelain. “Cauuuuse I told you, I don’t eat vegetables.” “Right, and why, exactly?” He deadpanned and sighed. “I don’t like them.” Sliding his food across the marble, he walked around and sat beside Max. She was now safely nestled between two strapping males. “And how old are you?” Max asked, like a smart ass. “Jaxon, you sound like a toddler.” “I don’t care. They’re tasteless and crunchy, and bland. I like sweet, spicy or salty. There isn’t shit about a piece of lettuce that gets my dick hard.” Low sprayed 1956 white all over the counter. If AB didn’t wanna fuck him so badly, he’d make him clean the mess with his tongue. However, his laughter was akin to a symphony. It absolved him of any wrongdoing. Low called forth positive emotions rather than darker ones. “What the hell,” Low blurted. “Food does that to you?” “Depends. I love candy, so if I go into a candy store—Hay, have you been to Vegas? They have dozens of confectionery stores. I be rock solid.” “That’s not normal, you need help.” Max stared up at him and grinned. “Like professionally.” AB snickered, diving head first into his food. He put away high calorie carbs and washed it down. “Uhm, your house is hella nice, but uhhhh…Your kitchen looks like Martha Stewart threw up in it.” AB leaned forward and shot Low a narrowed gaze. How dare he compare his taste in decor to the likes of that hack. She didn’t know shit. And there wasn’t a single article containing the initials M and S in his house. Low cleared his throat and scanned the dining table AB copped online. It was Renata Alexander, Tinwood collection. “And the more I look around,” Low continued. “The more I’m noticing. Knick knacks and things… You got a giant jar of buttons sitting on your dining table. French country side, modern, contemporar—what you going for exactly?” “What I want and what I like,” AB asserted. “Fair enough, it’s still beautiful, though. Just like your office. I can see Tracy there.” “See Tracy where?” Max asked. AB paused and glanced at Low as he grimaced. “Your pops and I will be working together,” AB supplied, words running together. Her eye twitched. She stabbed Low with a menacing glare AB thought was adorable. She growled. Also cute. “What the hell, Low? Why didn’t you tell me?” “I literally just found out,” he checked his watch, “eight hours ago.” “And you’ve texted me since. Why is my Dad working with you, Jaxon?” AB hiccuped and rose, full as hell. He shouldn’t have ate so much, sleep wasn’t on the schedule, and he grew weary after eating heavy. “I need what he has, and he needs what I can—” She stopped him with a hand. “I don’t wanna know anymore. The less, the better.” “Good idea,” he said, gathering empty plates. “I know Britney gave you her number.” “Who’s Britney?” Max asked. “Is she fine?” “Yes, very,” AB added, rinsing dishes. “And she likes Low, or wants to fuck him. I don’t know.” “Oh she do, and I might cut that down.” Throwing everything in the dishwasher, AB snarled. It was clear Low and Max had a disgustingly open relationship. But seeee, AB didn’t share well. He was an only child who never shared time, food, or toys. If it wasn’t these two with each other, or AB, he had a problem. Max set the tone, though, didn’t she? After slamming the stainless steel door, he turned to the food and reapplied lids. “I bet you would, but heres the thing, Low,” AB cocked a brow and sneered. “You will be working with her.” The male’s gray eyes bounced between them. “Uhmm Red, I— you and me we…” “That’s different,” he retorted, sliding containers into the fridge. “Chauncey! Bortimier!” AB called for his children and retrieved dry-aged cubes of steak from the cabinet. Not Joe. USDA approved beef, only. It was a real treat. Not fake, processed, chemical laced poison. “Oh, my god.” Max giggled. “That’s what you named them?” “Yeah, they’re strong monikers.” As they came running he pointed and commanded, “Sit. Chauncey, he’s a champion breed Malamute. Twelve months. Sit! Goood boy. Catch.” AB tossed up the jerky and his good boy jumped for it. Bort wanted her piece, of course. “Okay Bort, sit… siiiiiit.” She spun and barked, back talking him. “No, do what I say or get nothing.” She sat right down. “That’s my baby girl, here you goooo.” He let her take it from his palm and said, “And this, is Bort. I adopted her from the pound three years ago. She was a four week old puppy from an abandoned litter. Go now, off with you, go play!” “Why the fuck you name the poor girl Bortamier?” Max grimaced. “That was cruel.” “Who says a girl dog has to have a feminine name? Good god, you go by Max.” She snarled and hissed, “It’s unisex.” “No it isn’t.” “It is too.” Raising her chin, she turned and dropped from the stool. Sun dresses were a gift from the heavens. Thin fabric covered her well without restricting the body. A hypnotizing dance garnered AB’s full attention until she stopped in the living room. “Wheres the mokentroll?” she asked. “On the end table.” Low chuckled into his glass and knocked the rest back. “How you know what a mokentroll is, white boy?” Sighing, AB dragged a stare to his interviewer. “My mother was married to a Black man for 98 years. We were close, I learned a lot from him.” That gave Mr. Collins pause, and he acknowledged with a slight nod. “Oh, that’s coo.” “Anyway. I wasn’t aware we were watching TV.” “You the one talking,” Max interjected from the couch. “Why is this thing so big. I can’t—Jesus Christ. I just need the p—the blue one maybe.” “No!” Too late. The shutters began their ascension and all hell broke loose. Low sprinted for Max and sacked her to the floor while AB dropped right where he was “Close them!” “How do—ho—fuck! I can’t see!” Hearing, instead of seeing the blinds stop, AB put abilities to use and willed them down. God damn it, they were slow. Heat blared and roared like an actual blaze. Beaming UV rays became physical, tangible. Something you could touc and tast. It had a voice and a nefarious nature. Sentient and out for blood. A snarling, ravenous beast seeking sustenance. Vampires were its favorite. The repetitive thud-unk and lack of hellfire gave AB the all clear. He popped up and groaned. “How many times are you gonna try to kill me?!” “This was you—move, Low.” “Ow! Don’t touch it, don’t touch it.” “Oh babyyyy. You got burned. See what you did, Red?” “Me?!” Arriving at the small mound of bodies, he hissed. The back side Low’s forearm was grazed. Probably third degree burns. “You saved me.” Max smiled and AB stared. Envy and greed tussled within as their lips fused. He gave them as much time as they wanted. “Okay, come on. Do you have any burn cream?” “I do.” AB extended a hand and Max accepted it. He yanked her upward and she gasped. “Be easy now, don’t wanna break my brittle bones.” She giggled, as he helped Low to his feet as well. “It don’t hurt that bad anymore, but maybe put some milk on it or—” “This isn’t nineteen-fifty-six, Low.” AB smiled and pulled him into the kitchen. He kept burn ointment in the fridge. It was best to keep some on hand when one was deathly allergic to the sun. Retrieving it, he made another offer. “You want a pint?” “Sure, it’ll speed up the healing.” “I got it,” Max said, rushing to busy herself. AB dipped two fingers into the cool cream. “I shoulda told her about that.” “Damn skippy,” Low gritted through his teeth as AB tapped his wound. Slathering another layer on his blistering, charred skin, he winced with the patient. “Sorry,” he murmured, paying close attention to his work. “I’m trying to be gentle.” “I doubt you can be.” His face warmed, but he paid the quip no mind, this was important. Low had been marred and it was kinda, sorta AB’s fault. “Here.” Max handed him a cold mug. “You forgot to heat it.” “Oh no, remember? He doesn’t drink hot blood.” Snapping back, AB blinked. “I still don’t understand.” “I don’t drink hot blood damn, not everyo—” “No.” AB shook his head. “ Everyone does. I think you are legit the only vampire who doesn’t, and I can’t wrap my mi—why? Why do you not drink it hot? Why in the hell are you voluntarily drinking cold blood?” “’Cause I like how it taste, suck my dick.” With pleasure, AB thought. “I do what I want.” Watching the male lift the cup to his lips, AB fought an overwhelming impulse to vomit. The way he downed the drivel was infuriating. “You a sick, sick individual, Low. A reeeal sociopath. My god!” AB sprinted for the sink and scoffed. “God damn, it’s one thing to be forced into reheating blood, but it’s something else entirely to be drinking it cold. I mean, you’re exhibiting serial killer behavior.” Washing and rinsing, AB was on the verge of cross examining Low for his disgusting habit but the male had other plans. As expected. It’s what they came for. Body heat at his back, desire rose like the tide. Low added pressure from behind and AB gasped when a palm slipped underneath his tank. Cool, and gingerly seeking, sensations arose from the depths and enveloped him. Unable to move or speak, AB’s knees weakened and heart thundered. Mind in a blur and a rush all at once, he welcomed Low’s exploration. On his skin and below the waist, he clutched and squeezed. Throwing palms out, AB caught himself on the counter. Breathing came second to feeling. Low pushed his hair aside and what followed made AB pine;yearn. Kisses on the back of his neck put strength and will to test. AB quivered and trembled for more as lips brushed his ear. The male nipped his lobe and gripped his dick. “You thought about me, huh?” Low’s question was mean and guttural. AB bucked from how the sound penetrated bone. “Yeah, I know. And Max?” Low slow stroked his shaft as a titillating visions held AB for ransom. Max naked, in various positions and screaming. “You thought about my shortie, too? Tell me.” “Yes.” AB panted. The action required too much concentration and energy. He couldn’t focus, not with Low rubbing him straight into an orgasm. Legs shaking, a hot tension swelled in the pit of his sou—painful pin pricks shocked and appalled him the second Low released. AB whipped around, ditched the dish towel, and stalked for the male as he backpedaled. “I don’t like being teased.” “And I don’t give a fuck what you like,” Low admonished. “Liar.” AB sniffed the air and pivoted. “Where’s Max?” “She left us already. In your room if I had to guess.” Low crept backwards and smirked. “Max?!” AB yelled, choking his hard dick. She appeared on the Mezzanine. “Don’t be hollering my name. Figured the biggest room was yours. Not too hard to find. You got nice clothes.” The sight of her in his Dior silk should have pissed him off. How could he get upset when she looked sexy as fuck wearing it? Low launched into the air and landed next to Max with cat like elegance. “There you go, running from me again?” AB snapped. “Bitch, ain’t nobody running from you. I’m sick of talking.” They were in agreement then and as such, AB followed his lead. Foregoing the stairs, he vaulted up and over, onto the mezzanine. AB stomped through double doors, entered his suite, and darted toward Low. Their mouths met graciously, despite a feral desire to fuck him. Shea and Bergamot filled his lungs. Tasting Low was a simple sweetness. AB licked his way inside and clawed at the shirt. Yanking it over Low’s head they separated for mere seconds. He rejoiced at their physical contact. With Low leading, he pushed AB until his heel clipped the frame, and down he went. On his back, AB watched Low claw at his pants and rip them off. In less than a minute, Low settled between his legs while Max flopped on the bed. AB pulled her in and longed to taste the other half. Where Low calmed and soothed, Maxi ignited and sparked. A feverish desire replaced cool, tranquil waters. A pyre had nothing on her. She forced him to growl and beg. He wanted much, to the point of pain, but glorified in earnest when Low pushed inside. Top to bottom he was covered and taken. Owned like an object, and he’d submit willingly to be used like one.

Until next week, lovelies, have a good night and an even better week.
After being interrupted in the weirdest way possible, AB spent the next few hours resorting and stacking. Without added speed, it gave him something to do. After which, he went through everything on Tracy’s slooooooow as hell 2006 Gateway PC. XP, not even Vista. It was simpler without OneDrive, Dropbox, or Drive. Quicker too. Anndddd ohhhhh, boy, the info one gathered. Maxine Bernice Bissette did, in fact, own Ink in Hell. Daddy supplied funds, however, as he did with everything else. The Wrangler out front, a shared phone bill, and Maxine’s monthly allowance. She had nothing of her own. AB dug in his pocket and pulled out a cherry Jolly Rancher. He unwrapped the hard candy and tossed it back. There was no reason to be a hundred years old and not have something going for yourself if you had means. At first glance, this woman had every opportunity to be independent. Why wasn’t she self-reliant? A woman who couldn’t take care of herself was unattractive. Personally, AB hated those who didn’t have a pot to piss in or two pennies. Much more, he couldn’t stand the ones who’d depend on him every waking moment. Being broke was not cute, baby. Sure, okay, she owned-ran the shop. But how much did it earn? Not enough. Not in Miami, and not for a spoiled female who lived comfortably with daddy her whole life. “A damn shame.” Sucking on his brand of crack cocaine, AB clocked the time. 2am. Roughly five hours of work. “Not bad at all.” Accounting was something AB liked quite a bit. He loved numbers and boring, monotonous work. Hell, why not? Living was boring, so why not find a career just as tedious? With this job, AB enjoyed the freedom. Having no boss and long hours, if he wanted them. It was more of a hobby than a profession at this point. AB dragged ass going through the paperwork and shit because he enjoyed it. Knocking around the candy in his mouth, he shot to his feet and tidied himself. Cuff links, vest, and lastly, his suit jacket. He willed the light off and promised to return. There were two tubs left and however many boxes. On his way out, he closed the door and hoped Tracy was near. AB had a question or two, nothing big. Just a few discrepancies here and there. Passing Maxine’s room, he sniffed and growled. She smelled amazing. Fresh gardenias and fucking Shalamar. Classic and clean. Then again, she was a poor commoner, a female who’d demand a band and diamonds just for breathing. He shuddered and stalked into the formal living, whereupon he sat on the sofa. Perusing Tracy’s home was boorish. Someone would come along, with lights blaring and the precious aroma of grilled meat piquing his interest. Maybe he had some ramen at home, or Ricearoni. Biting down on hardened corn syrup, he watched as two stooges came laughing through the front door. What was up with her and those glasses? Everywhere? God damn it, she had a lazy eye. For sure, something like that. Had to be, maybe a visual impairment of some sort. A subtle limp too, that wa—her thighs were throwing him off, but her not boyfriend stared. “Why you just sitting there?” he asked. “I’m waiting for Tracy.” “My dad is out back,” she laughed, “oh my god…” Biting her bottom lip, she shrugged. “Ya’ll are really high,” AB noted. “Nah, I’m coo’. Shorty trippin’ though.” Low lied, his brilliant stormy gray stare shone through slits. “I ain’t even got my half, muh’fucka’.” “Your what?” Low recoiled and made a dismissive noise. “Nothing, college boy. You don’t know nothing ’bout this shit. Aye, for real, your hair is fucking me up. It’s like a red light, hella abrasive and bright.” AB snapped his cuffs and thought to count from one to ten. He couldn’t, wouldn’t allow himself to lash out in this man’s home. “That cookie was too big, Low… Dammmmn.” “You lyin’, they made it with that whack ass Miami Heat.” Low chuckled and threw an arm over Maxine’s shoulder. “Shit was booboo.” “Miami heat? The basketball team?” AB asked. They exploded in laughter once again. “The basket—man, hell nah,” Low bellowed. “Mind the business that pays.” AB cracked his neck and sneered at a male way in over his head. A twenty-thousand-dollar suit and kind eyes fooled a lot of people. But Low knew what kinda man he was dealing with; he didn’t seem so dumb. “You’ll get real tired of fuckin’ with me. I promise you that.” Maxine rolled her neck. “Ooooo.” She snorted. “Anyway, where the steak at?” “Ah, Jaxon.” Tracy arrived, saving the day, but Low made an odd choking noise. “You’ve finished?” AB smiled and stood. “Yes, for tonight, of course. I’ll be back Monday bright and early at nine thirty.” “Splendid. Say, are you hungry?” He nearly refused but Jaya wouldn’t have it. “Come on, Jaxon, you can’t turn down the T-Bone. Low is a master on the grill.” “I am. When it come to the meat, I tear—” Maxine elbowed him. “I’d love to, but I—” “Love it so much, then eat it,” Maxine said. “Let’s not do this again,” Tracy said, eying her. “You know what,” Ab interjected, checking the Audemars. “I have some time.” The male clapped once in celebration. “Perfect, it’s such a lovely night. Shall we?” Everyone sauntered outside and AB was dead last. ‘Cause weeelll, ass was ass, and it wasn’t slim pickings up in this bitch. “What a fine entertainment set up you have here, Tracy.” Sitting at a long patio table tucked under a cedar pergola, AB was actually impressed. He noted bottles of wine, bread, and various sides. Potent spices, mesquite, and peppers scented the humid night air. They had ample lighting and smooth jazz; it was a nice touch. Everything dinner guests needed, with a built-in TV, full-sized grilling area, and room for twelve. “Thank you so much.” Tracy grinned, admiring his well-tended backyard. “Interior design is a hobby of mine.” AB placed his bag in the chair next to him and said, “If that’s the case, then I think you should start taking clients and build a portfolio.” “Oh no.” He waved a hand. “Pipe dreams earn no living.” “Pipe dreams can and will earn a living if you’re passionate enough,” AB replied, removing his jacket for the second time. Maxine nodded. “Word.” She sat opposite him and giggled her ass off. “That’s right, Dad. Passion breeds success.” “I don’t think that’s it.” Low added, but Maxine rolled her eyes. “Shut up!” “Use your inside voice, Maxine. For God’s sake. We have company. Mind yourself, girl.” Jesus, Tracy was a nightmare. No wonder she used her body as a canvas. Rebellion appeared in many forms, and he bet money her pops hated tattoos. “Sorry, Father,” she amended, adding bass to her voice. “Meat coming right up!” Low shouted from behind Max. He glanced at AB. “Hope it ain’t too sweet.” “You’ve never made it sweet, Elliot.” Jaya was minding her own quiet business. On the phone and smiling about something. “How long have you worked for Tracy, Jaya?” AB asked, stirring a bit of conversation. “If you don’t mind.” She looked at Tracy and didn’t speak until he nodded. “Since nineteen-twenty-one.” “That is a long time.” So Max had been waited on hand and foot since birth. A nanny. Jaya was Max’s nursemaid, what the fuck. He kept a bout of hysterical laughter to himself. “It is, but I think of them as my family.” She shrugged and beamed. “They are my family.” “Awwwwww. I love you, Jaya.” “I love you too, Maxi.” “Dear god.” Tracy’s disgust shone on his tight features. “What is that smell?” Jaya’s attention cut to Max. “Yes.” AB grimaced. “What is it, a skunk?” “Nah, it ain’t that,” Low murmured, handling the steak platter. They smelled hella good, too. “It ain’t that stank.” Max and Jaya snorted, but AB missed the joke. “Well, it’s strong whatever it is.” The man smirked, showcasing a mouth full of golds. Even his fangs gleamed. “I’ve come in contact with more pungent aromas. This one is subtle, but it almost stinks.” “Elliot, what are you going on about, man?” Tracy looked up at him while a slab was dropped on his plate. “The smell, Tracy.” “Oh yes, I may have to call pest control.” Max giggled and went for the bread. “What is this? Sourdough, yeessss. I love bread. Mostly cause you can put butter on it.” A 24-ounce T-bone was dropped on AB’s plate; juice splattered. He gaped, staring at his vest. A six-thousand-dollar Taupe Kiton vest, which he had waited two weeks to have tailored, was now stained. This motha fucka had a death wish. “I’m so sorry,” Low intoned. “I didn’t know it was finna hit like that.” “Elliot, that was quite rude.” AB chuckled, unwrapped his utensils, and snapped the dinner napkin. “It’s A-okay.” Glaring at the male, AB smiled. “Accidents happen.” Low sniffed and moved on. “Are you sure?” Jaya asked. “I can get some club soda.” “Oh Jaya, I fear that’s Vicuña.” The pity on Tracy’s face spoke of a man who understood AB’s pain. “Club soda would compromise the material. I hope it comes out in the dry cleaning.” “I’m sure it will,” AB said in a delighted tone to shield broiling anger. “What do we—” “You don’t want no sides?” Low nitpicked as he sat next to his not girlfriend. Who mind you, was an inch away from turning her steak into a pillow. “No, I’ll take bread, that’s enough for me. Tracy, are you not hungry?” “He’s vegan.” AB winced at the unexpected, curve-ball response. What terrible vampire etiquette. “Is that right?” “Yes,” Tracy said. “The environment is being attacked. And we will be here long after the human waste reaches their expiry date. If we don’t do something, we will be left with nothing.” “What are we gonna do when they die?” Max asked, as it seemed she’d come to. “That is too morbid a subject, Maxine.” Her father’s words were terse as he cut into a… tofu, cauliflower, bean… steak, thing. What the fuck did vegans eat? “Such discourse is not fit for a gathering of this nature. So, Jaxon, are you from Miami? Well, you know.” “Uh, do you mind?” He pointed at a tempting bottle of Cabernet. “Oh no, of course.” AB gripped the neck, poured a decent drop, and loved how it’d been aired beforehand. Tracy was a man of class and culture. “No. No, I am not from Florida. I moved here about eight years ago. I was born in Ireland, moved to London, and then to the States. I’ve been here siiiiince… seventeen-ninety-five.” “Before its inception?” “Yeah, my mother and I hopped a Spanish vessel and wound up in Cali. But she lives in London now.” “Californiaaaaa?” Max sat amazed, and it offered AB more insight. Bet his left nut she’d never been out of state. “Yes, it was a long time ago.” Slicing into a superb slab of beef, he changed topics quick as hell. “Tracy, you’ve been a busy bee.” “Indeed, I’ve acquired a lot over my lifetime.” With an immaculate sliver of beef on the fork, he shoved it between his lips, annnnnnd, heaven sent. Damn it, Low made a mean steak. Succulent, with a glorious char and rare. Rosemary, garlic, onion, cayenne, mesquite, applewood, not charcoal, and sweet cream butter. “Although you ruined my vest, I must hand it to you. This is a phenomenal steak. It’s top tier.” Low smiled lazily and lifted his glass. “I’m something like a chef.” “He is,” Tracy agreed. “Maxine!” Her head popped up. “Huh? I don’t like Neapolitan ice cream.” AB chuckled at her… what did the kids call it? State of inebriation. Low thought it was funny, too, but he wasn’t doing any better. “Are you tired?” Tracy prodded. “Yeah, bruh.” “Don’t bruuuuh me, young lady.” She only laughed. “Steak! Yesss.” “As I was saying, Tracy, you’ve dabbled in a fair share of real estate.” He nodded but shrugged it off. “I have. I flip houses.” Tracy was a liar. “Ohhh, that explains it. Makes sense.” It did not. And AB had every intention of digging deeper, ‘til he got to the nasty, bitter core. Then he’d make Mr. Bissette an offer he’d dare not refuse. For now, AB would accept the fallacy and enjoy his fabulous meal. In the end, he had two cuts while they sat outside and conversed. The weather, TV shows, and stupid shit people talked about. AB made certain not to speak on personal matters. He didn’t know them, and putting your business in the street had the capacity to bite you in the ass. So, he kept it nice and easy, even through the hummingbird cake and a bubbly dessert wine. But as with all things, their fun came to an end. AB had had enough small talk for one night. “Wow, you all sure know how to party.” “This wasn’t no party…” Max giggled and had a good five minutes left in her. The nodding worsened by the minute. “Oh, you’re an accountant. Meehhhh, boring personality, bruh.” Tracy clapped his hands. “That’s enough from you, uh… Elliot, will you escort my daughter to her room? She is out of sorts.” “My pleasure.” AB bit down on a raunchy comment resting on his tongue. “I really love your hair,” Max said, allowing Low to manhandle her. “Thank you.” “It’s like, blazing.” “Elliot.” “Yup.” He hefted Max bride style and sprinted away. “I do apologize for my—” “Don’t do that, Tracy,” Jaya snipped. “I swear you want Max to hate you.” This was a deep convo not suited for guests. Tracy’s head fell as he sighed. “I have enjoyed your company, Jaxon.” “You as well.” On his feet, AB grabbed both the Bottega and his jacket. “I am stuffed, and Jaya, the cake was divine.” She blushed. “Thank you, but I didn’t make that. Max did, she’s a baker.” His brows arched. “Oh, okay.” The woman had a way with flour and sugar. That confection was moist as fuck. “Please do tell her I loved it.” “I will.” AB left the pair on their own and showed himself out. Halfway to his car, he stopped to admire the Monte Carlo. A sweet, sexy thing she was. He liked how the engine purred, too. Classy. “You wanna test drive?” Low emerged from the shadows, like AB couldn’t see or sense another vampire’s presence. The tip of a blunt glowed briefly as he advanced. “I’ll let you ride it. Ride in it, I mean.” “You’re terrible at come-ons.” AB sniffed and shrugged. “Who uses Swishers anymore?” “I do, damn. I was outta woods. Stay out Black folks business. You look like the dispensary type. Legal trash. What you smoke? Bongs and vaporizers? Typical white boy shit.” AB snarled. “You talk a lot.” “I know. It’s part of my charm, bruh.” “Your charm?” He scoffed and flicked a hand. “I’m this way. Have a good night.” “Let me know if you want that test drive.” AB opened his car door while Low tact on bullshit. “Prolly can’t handle it, though.” He stopped short of getting in and faced the verbose male. “I’d advise you to ease up while you’re ahead.” AB zoned in on his ass and sneered. “This ain’t what you want, trust me.” Low laughed, expelling a pillow of smoke and said, “Ain’t? Look at you, so cute. I ain’t trippin’, Red. You too tight in the ass for me anyway. I like my men pensive. But believe you me, I done made more than one alpha turn coy.” Low discarded the blunt and added, “I’ll be sure to tell Max you an accountant annnd pussy.” Unbelievable. If the male hadn’t vanished, Jaxon would have yolked his ass up. Try to kill him, probably. “Ohhhhhh, my god. I need a drink.”
. I hope yall are ready for quite the ride going forward. READ THE CONTENT WARNINGS AND LEARN ‘EM. I’m not joking. Please take care if dark romance isn’t your thing; feel free to skip certain chapters. These don’t happen in the same chapter or the next, but they are coming, and quickly. Also, I don’t know why I said mild gore because nah, there is quite a bit. For me, it’s mild, but for others, it might be too much. As always, thank you so much for reading, I hope you have a wonderful week.
“Break, break, me open with your all-seeing eye. Crunch, crunch. My bones. Bite me down to the, the, the core.” AB hissed and clapped his hands. “That’s heat. It’s my best yet.” He never considered himself a Huges type, but shit, he was close—something like him for sure. Langston would probably have nothing negative to say. Feedback from the poets’ group chat was all positive. “Now for a title.” He ruminated for a second. “Fiery cry.” AB saved the document as Brittany interrupted, her voice singing through the intercom. “Mr. Aubrey, a gentleman would like to speak with you, but he doesn’t have an appointment.” AB swiped his tablet, tapped on the calendar, and scrolled. He had forty minutes to spare before the next appointment. “Alright, I’ve got time. Bring him in.” “Yes, sir.” “Mmmhhm.” He loved that, sir shit, it never got old. Especially when she uttered the words. Brit was a vivacious sixty-year-old halfbreed with a pert ass and soft lips. “Buuuuut that’s totally unprofessional, bro.” AB cleared his desk of candy wrappers and Coke cans. He pushed everything over the side and into a tiny trash bin near his desk. With practiced ease, he opened the drawer, retrieved a mirror, and checked for imperfections. “Not a speck.” A small knock alerted him to their arrival. He stashed the looking glass, jumped to it, and buttoned his Dior vest. Britney appeared first and held the door. A male of decent stature sauntered in, confident and friendly. Shoes, Chanel. Rolex. A gold signet ring of some sort. Fresh line and a tailored goatee. AB smelled greenbacks as they shook hands. “Hello, I’m Jaxon Aubrey.” “Tracy Bisset,” the male said, releasing his strong grip. “I apologize, it’s uncommon for me to show up without an appointment, but I am in quite a bind.” “Oh no, I take walk-ins. Have a seat, and we can talk. Britney, get our friend here some refreshments.” “Yes, sir.” She smiled and walked her fine ass out as AB marched behind his long desk, cut from the finest of pine. “You have a magnificent office.” Mr. Bisset spared a moment to examine the expansive space before taking a load off across from him. “Quite welcoming.” “Thank you.” He appreciated small talk, but time was money. “I take decor very seriously, seeing as I spend most of my time here. Now, what can I do for you, Mr. Bissette?” Tracy crossed his legs and frowned. “I would like to retain your services.” Those words gave AB a back rub with baby oil; however, Tracy here needed to be informed. AB wasn’t trying to swindle a paying customer. Yet. “Is this a referral?” “Yes.” “Great, can you tell me who, so I can give them a discount?” “Oh yes, uhm Stan—” “Connors, Stan Connors, ohhhh yeah.” Jaxon nodded and wondered where Britney was with the perishables. “He’s a regular client. Are you two friends? Not to assu-” “Acquaintance. I run a construction firm, and he’s also one of my clients.” Hallelujah. “I asked several colleagues for advice, and you were named three times. I was given human recommendations as well, but I…” Tracy cleared his throat and corrected an immaculate silk knot at his throat. “I’d rather not fraternize with the horde.” “Ah, understandable. Okay, well, I can and will help you after you look over my portfolio.” “I’ve done that already.” “Excellent.” Leaning forward, Jaxon linked fingers atop his blotter and smiled. “First, I will need a compiled checklist of what it is you require of me and a three-thousand-dollar retainer. After which, my rate is 110 dollars per hour.” “Done.” What a gorgeous mix of letters. He might just come in his slacks. “Beauuuutiful.” AB reached and snapped a matte black premium embossed business card. “Take this, and call me when you have what I need. My fax and email are listed as well. Send it however you like.” Jaxon rose, offering his palm once more. “I can’t wait to do business.” “I’ll call you in a day or two.” “Terrific.” Wearing a warm smile, he escorted Mr. Bisset out of his office, watched him leave, and looked down at his doe-eyed secretary. “What happened to the water and cookies?” She gasped. “Oh my god, I forgot. I was sorting brochures.” “Wow. You know…” Towering, he stared at the woman, AB inhaled her precious perfume in a greedy gulp. She smelled like cherries and a simple syrup, batting her long, thick lashes. Peering into her big eyes, he remembered Brit was an employee. Saying what he wanted was grounds for a lawsuit. So AB stuffed hands in his pockets and sighed. “It’d be great if next time, you could remember.” “I will, I swear.” The cutie bit her bottom lip. On that note, AB went about his business. “When our twelve o’clock shows, send them right in. I wanna breeze through tonight.” “Got it.” Rushing into his ‘welcoming’ office, AB grunted at the thought of what was to come. He didn’t want to work tonight, oddly enough. At least, not as an accountant. But work was work. Thanks to an impending dreary summer, he only had five hours on the clock. Though short and sweet became long and grueling, fast. Especially with perusers and clients who had other, more pertinent issues. AB worked out of his office mostly, but traveled often. Minutes ticked by, and the twelve left, then two arrived. She was a sassy silver-haired familiar who wanted a free ride; he might oblige after checking her books. By the time AB stashed his laptop and tablet in a 1976 Bottega, it was 3 am, and he was done. Numbers were so much fun, but a bastard needed unwinding. Willing lights off, he and the bag marched out with the key Fob in hand. Britney vanished ten minutes before and always had. He thought, would it still be unprofessional even if they were off the clock? AB laughed like a creep and strolled across glossy hardwood. His unit was seven thousand square feet. He had an entire floor in the heart of the Brickell financial district with panoramic views. Stuck-up rich people loved it here. His slice of the pie sported minimalistic vibes with bright woods and gray suede. Muted tones, a comfy break room, and even a balcony for smoking. There was a second executive office that served no real purpose other than to store boxes and records. AB had no intention of ever taking on a partner. He liked to work alone and stick to himself. After turning everything else off, he engaged the alarm, stepped out, and secured the locks. Without keys. He strutted down the long, echoing hall and hopped in the waiting elevator. Stabbing the B-level button, he made a point not to look at—there were forty-three— AB closed his eyes and poked at random. “Shit, shit, shit, shitshitshit… I am sooooo sorry, Jerry.” Cracking a lid, AB took a deep breath and felt better since it was over. All those precious buttons glowed bright, setting the world right. He glanced at the camera and whistled along to a dumb ass elevator tune that never changed. The box stopped six times before reaching the garage. AB made haste, ran from the lift, and stopped at a modest Hyundai. It was a good car and had tons of legroom. No matter how long he spent in Florida the humidity always strangled him. Before getting in, AB quickly removed his tie and vest. 2.5 seconds and his knees would start sweating. “Yuck.” There was something in the air; it smelled different here. Moist, stuffy, and ripe with vegetation. Everywhere he went, swamp water, brine, nocturnal vagabonds. And the fucking Iguanas, Jesus Christ. “Move to Miami, it’ll be fun. Girls and beaches. Ass and Margaritas. Bitch!” Once seated in the full-size sedan, he threw on a goody. Keep It On the Real. Decades, plural, could pass, and Stackin Chips would still be fire. Backing out, he opened the middle compartment, plucked a waiting preroll and a lighter. With one hand on the wheel, he put lips to the blunt and sparked. AB threw the Zippo, smashed the gas, and made a hard right. Damn one-way streets. After turning onto SW 9th, he found himself jumping onto the I-95. Now, why was he heading straight for Miami Beach? Curiosity, maybe. With lungs loaded with Purple Haze, he held that shit and found a parking space in front of the shop ten minutes later. It being Monday and close to four am, not a soul lurked on the sidewalk. As AB exhaled thick cream, he stared at the shop’s comings and goings. In truth, he was mildly curious about that mouthy little woman with the weird hair. Apparently, he was interested and laughed at her corny ass joke. So, at the very least, he wanted to suck a tiddie. Whenever AB spotted a potential smash and pass, he went for it. After a final hit, he pinched the glowing cherry and stashed it behind his ear. AB then snatched his shirt tails free, unbuttoned, and let the tank work some heavy overtime. Emerging from the vehicle, he noted a blonde out front who stiffened at the very sight of him. “Sup?” She smiled. “Hi.” The tattoo shop was packed with vampires. Miss Mini Skirt looked like an employee. Music was loud as he entered goth heaven. Black on black. Everything, save for the counter space and a white POS. “Oh wow, you’re back, uhm…” The tall brunette with a short cut squinted. “Jaxon.” “Nice memory.” She smirked and nodded. “Come for one yourself this time?” “Nah, nah. I was wondering if the other…” Lifting a hand to his torso, she snickered. “Short one, is around.” “Yeah, actually. She’s in the back, getting her stuff.” Pixie Cut turned, then looked back at him. “We’re about to close up.” “I feel you. Uhm, I’ll wait here.” The female on his radar returned from wherever she had been, and have mercy, hips and thighs were on deck. God damn! He didn’t know what she was looking for in that bag, but hopefully it was her number. “Ndari, baby, have you seen my phone?” “In the POS.” “Shit, right.” She halted and glanced at her buddy. He couldn’t tell for sure, behind the frames. She had a Corey Hart, Sunglasses At Night, fetish. “Look who it is, Ginger Snaps. I’d love to offer a session, but we are done for the night.” She marched forward and he observed the slight limp. Rummaging through the register, she snorted. “You know wh—giiiiirrl, I don’t remember putting it in there.” Scatterbrained? Unattractive. Slamming it shut, she said, “So anyway, feel free to make an appointment Lucky—” “I fucking dare you to finish that sentence. My Mama doesn’t even call me Lucky Charms.” Eyes darted as the blonde swayed behind the counter and the tall one shook her head. But Shorty, recoiled. “You, are a customer in my establishment, and I can refuse service at any time, Irish Cream. I will tase yo big ass. I got one in my purse, run up.” Unclear on how to respond, AB laughed, cause the Napoleon complex was strong as fuck with this one. “Damn, I didn’t come to get tased shit, all I wanted was your number.” She made an odd croaking sound, looked at her employee, then dove into her purse again. “Why you want my number?” “So I can text you. Or FaceTime.” “Fuck FaceTime, I hate Apple…” she paused with the digging and looked up again. “You wanna call me?” “If that’s okay, I guess. Or not.” “I, uhhhh…” She sought her girls again, shrugged, and giggled. Ah, insecure as well. Strike two. She was racking them up quick, but Miss Ma’am didn’t have a thigh gap, and that was his weakness. Smash and dash. Lick and flip, etc. “You know what, I—” Being rude as hell, a male with no sense of personal space leaned on the counter and smiled at Shorty. “Wus up, baby? You ready?” “Yeah, yeah. Uhm…” “Ohhh, you have a boyfriend.” AB sniffed and threw up his hands. “My fault, you coulda just said that.” “He’s not my boyfriend.” “I ain’t,” the male blurted, eyes tracing AB’s frame. “You wanna holla, feel free. Let me mind my business, over here.” He slid to the sitting area, and Jaxon looked back at… “Like I was saying, name and number.” “I think I’ll pass. Oh shit, my Monster.” She scoffed. “I’ll be right back.” As the female ran away after rejecting him like a trick, AB admired the wagon. God! “Damn, bruh, she curved the hell outta you.” “You’re all up in my space.” It seemed the male had crept in beside him once again. “You don’t own me or the shop.” He chuckled. “The fuck.” “If y’all aren’t together, what’s the problem?” The rude gent smiled and checked him for the second time. AB snarled. “You got one more time, halfbreed.” “Aye, bruh, relax. I was just looking, and she ain’t gon’ let you hit…” Licking his lips, the male met AB in the eyes. “But, if it’s back shots you want, I can ease that pain, you feel me.” Jaxon side-stepped and recoiled. “Excuse me?” “Damn, thought I got one. You old as shit from the smell of it. I assumed you was good with it.” “It’s your lack of tact that has me floored, not you hitting on me.” “I didn’t hit on you, Red. I asked if you wanted to fuck. Different shit.” “Okay, I’m ready.” The woman AB came to see, briefly considered him, then the other vampire, who cackled and pushed off the glass. “Let’s go, baby, we gotta buss some corners before sunrise.” As she came around, AB stared her down. Blushing and grinning were good signs. “So you’re gonna give me nothing?” he asked, as her friend exited. “No. N.O., damn. I know you heard me the first time. Bye, girls, be sure to lock up. You have ten minutes, Jack, or whatever your name is. Shit or get off the pot.” Her ass and attitude left. With it, Jaxon’s patience. Humiliation and rejection were uncomfortable. It happened, but maybe three times in his whole life. Yeeeeah, she was gonna regret this, but for now, he’d find a bitch who’d crawl through broken glass to suck his dick.
As Max ran for the ‘88 Monte Carlo she couldn’t breathe, and it wasn’t the heavy summer humidity. No, it was the thing that followed them outside. “Get in, get innnn.” The asshole cackled and nodded at the trailing redhead. “You like the view, boy?” “I am ‘bouta kill you.” Max squealed and dropped into the passenger seat. Slamming the door, she ducked. “Get in the fucking car!” “Don’t rush me!” he yelled while sliding behind the wheel. “Is he still there?” “Hell yeah. He got them eyes, baby.” “I knoooowww.” “But he high as fuck too.” “Shut up and let’s go. Pleaaaase,” Max begged. The bastard laughed again, and being high himself, he thought everything was funny. But thank god the engine turned over. Jacking upright, Max did the job of hitting switches. The bounce on its rise was always her favorite part. “Why do you gotta play this song every night?!” She groaned as What These Bitches Want came on loud as hell, thanks to them fifteens in the trunk. “’Cause I like it. You can walk, fuckin’ with me.” “I wish you would,” Max said with hard eye roll. “I’ma make you act right, keep on.” After busting an illegal ass u-turn on Arthur Godfrey, they ran a red light. This man often threw caution to the wind and stayed twenty above the speed limit. That’s why he had a glove box full of speeding tickets. Max giggled and reclined, as if there was a choice in his ‘cruising car’, the bench seat was stuck in recline. This particular vehicle only got action on his nights off, or after work…maybe. Candy apple red, loud, and sitting on old school Dayton’s. His Donk was ghetto excellence with coke white interior. She’d love to see it sparkle during the day, buuuut burning to death was a waste of time. Max minded her business and scrolled various social media sites until a thunder clap came down on her thigh. “Owwwww!” she whined, glaring at the driver. “That hurt, Low!” “Shut up.” Focused on the road and biting his bottom lip, he massaged and groped. Kneading and squeezing. “You never texted me back last night. What happened?” “I fell asleep.” “Lying ass.” His big hand slithered in between, and she shivered. Low’s touch worked like magic. Tingly and warm, Max slumped. She spread her thighs, allowing better access. This didn’t make a lick of sense. She was too old to be sneaking around with some boy! Low was a grown-ass man, but still. “I’m serious,” she said under duress. “I forgot and fell asleep.” “You always forgetting something. What you say to that man?” “Who?” Max hissed through her teeth as he clutched her purring kitty. “Red.” “Oh, nothing. I said nothing. In fact, I was pretty mean to him.” Low smiled, and good god, gold fronts suited him just fine. Shame he only wore them when ‘off-duty’. She liked those slugs. And you know, Low gave Travonte a run for his money. He was that handsome. Using his face as a chair was unavoidable; Max moisturized his exceptionally tailored beard whenever possible. Low was a big-bodied, single male vampire, and Max was unmarried, unbound. Free to mingle. They were never exclusive but had shared a bed for ten years. “You mean to everybody, Maxi.” “Not true.” “It is. And why you not gon’ let him smash?” Glancing at her chauffeur, she said, “Are you kidding? He’s a Pureblood.” “He is. Old too.” “Can’t wait ‘til I can pick up on that stuff.” “Give it fifty more years.” Max was about to unbutton her jeans when the car stopped at the nearest gas station. “Can you get me some hot fries?” “No,” Low bit back. She hissed at him and said, “Please, I’m craving them.” He slid on out and snickered. “I been craving some pussy, you don’t see me begging.” She shimmied on down and blushed. “Ooooh my god, say it louder, why don’t you? And Bet!” She giggled at his filthy mouth. He had no filter, unless at work. Low never cared about what came spouting from his mouth. To a certain extent, neither did Max. They understood each other in that way. Their pairing was highly flammable, but he was her best friend. Wasn’t nobody listening to rap for the duration. She poked the screen and connected her phone. Deciding quickly, Max smiled. “Ayyye, that’s more like it.” The Isley Brothers were her go-to. That Lady was a certified jam. Or was it banger? Slang was getting harder to keep up with. “Man, come on, baby, damn. You lucky I like this song.” Low returned, tossing a bag of hot fries and a bottle of E&J into her lap. “C’mon na’! Thank youuuu.” She kissed the glass and hugged it tight. “You drink like somebody grandma. A damn shame.” “Shut your mouth, you still drink Alize.” Low barked in laughter, started the Chevy, and whipped that hoe out of the parking lot. “You right. Why mess with a good thing?” “See, that’s exactly why I keep to my brandy.” Heading up 41st, she knew they were going to his weedman’s house. He had several in Florida and two in Miami Beach. Low picked her up a lot, so it was best to have one close by the shop. Especially when sunrise was due in an hour and racing them home. Max checked on her tattoo shop as they drove past and was happy to see the place empty. Her small, yet lucrative business was flanked by a kosher market and a Chase bank. It wasn’t South Beach, but being only four blocks away from the tourist trap meant she was in a prime opportunity zone. There were barbershops, eateries, and retail stores on every corner. Traffic flow was substantial, even when she operated after hours. At 3 a.m., however, pedestrians dwindled. Besides the unhoused, she was on a first-name basis with the streets, which were quiet at the moment. When they hit a left on Collins Avenue, Low slowed his ass down because the boys were surely lurking. This place was a dream for spring breakers and yacht enthusiasts. Fun in the sun, beaches, and cocktails. Cuban cuisine, Bossa Nova nights, and salsa dancing. Little Havana and coked-out weekends. “I fuckin’ hate palm trees, bruh.” Max deflated and groaned. “I love the ocean, but I hate humidity, sand in my ass, and entitled outta-towners.” “I know, Maxi.” Low sighed, offering comfort by rubbing her thigh. “I know.” She cringed. “This street makes me feel claustrophobic.” Condominiums and hotels rode the edge of either side like impenetrable prison walls. “I wanna move to like, Montana. See snow-covered pine trees. Live by a lake or something. Ninety-eight years I’ve been here. Goddd! Am I gonna have yet another existential crisis?” Low hummed, keeping eyes on Collins. “You’ll have at least ten before reaching a hundred.” “Great. Love that for me.” The moment Collins Ave turned into Dickens, she took a deep, relieved breath. From towering structures to squat buildings. Tom and Jane from Nebraska would go no further. Tourists didn’t like reality. They wanted ocean views and expensive seafood. Where Max and Low were headed reminded everyone that this was a concrete jungle. Granted, Montana had similar streets loaded with corner stores, pawn and smoke shops. The homeless, however, were sometimes better off on this side. “You remember when Florida was fun?” Max asked. “Hell yeah, before the money came through.” “Right. They turned our home into a shopping mall. And made it harder for everyone. I’ve been saving for five years. It’s bullshit.” “I already told you, Max, you can stay with me.” She arched a brow and said, “Yeah, right. So you can irk my nerves all damn day. Boy, please.” He giggled as the car stopped in front of Paul’s apartment complex. “I’ma be right back, huh.” Low reached under the seat and revealed his favorite Glock. He handed it off and Max cradled the cold weight. “You know what to do wit’ it.” “Bust some caps.” His expression flattened. “Don’t nobody say that no more.” “Well what they say then?” “Air it out? Nah, it’s spray it up.” They shared a bout of heavy laughter as he opened the door. “Whatever them kids be saying. I don’t know, hell.” She watched him hop the gate and jog that heavy, bubble on upstairs. Damn, he had a fat ass. Max was forever telling this man to pull up his britches. Why did everybody have to know the color of his boxers? It wasn’t cute, but she sho’ ‘nough stared at that moving picture every damn time.
Hello, you wonderful people. I hope y’all had a good week and have an even better weekend. I’ve been tweaking, revising, drafting, and promoting a book, so my plate is full as hell. I’m talking ham, yams, turkey, dressing, and greens. I’m gonna need another plate for the macaroni and cheese, chile! My gods. Anyway, we are moving forward in Neon Red, and let me just say, you’ll see a lot of focus on music. It carries me through each book and plays a huge part in Low’s life. If you don’t like name drops, I am sorry. One last thing, don’t forget, this is dark romance. And baby, it’s going to get darker. AB is morally gray, not black, but gray. He’s an ancient Pureblood with a past. Anyway, thank you for reading yet another chapter and as always, I wish you a lovely day! If you have any questions, please DM. Don’t be scared, I swear I don’t bite…all the time.
